What is blurry vision?
Blurry vision is a loss of sharpness, which can make objects appear out of focus.
In many cases, blurry vision is the result of a refractory error, which is the term used to describe changes in corneal shape that cast light unevenly on the retina and affect vision. The most common refractory errors are nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Presbyopia, an age-related change in the eye that causes both nearsightedness and farsightedness, is also commonly responsible for blurry vision.
In some cases, blurry vision is caused by contact lenses, cataracts, allergies, eye drops, migraines, dry eye, or floaters. In other cases, blurry vision can be an indicator of a much more serious underlying condition, such as glaucoma, diabetes, age-related macular degeneration, or serious systemic conditions.
Because the causes of blurry vision can range from harmless to life-threatening, blurry vision always requires a trip to the eye doctor for more thorough evaluation and treatment.
Do patients with mild impairment require treatment?
All patients with impairment should seek evaluation, but treatment is a critical component of quality of life despite the severity of the visual impairment. Mild impairment can result in eye strain, headaches, and squinting, while a recent study revealed that moderate visual impairment can increase a person’s risk of poverty, unemployment, and mental health problems.
How is blurry vision corrected?
Correcting blurry vision is often easy, noninvasive, and drug-free.
For most patients, blurry vision is corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Davich Optical performs the eye exam, prescribes the lens strength, and fulfills the prescription all under one roof. In addition, patients are able to choose from hundreds of designer and affordable lenses to find the pair that best reflects who they are.
In cases where blurry vision is a sign of an underlying condition, the condition must be treated to alleviate blurred vision.
Who can experience blurry vision?
Anyone of any age can experience either temporary or long-term blurred vision. Because the causes are so varied, nobody is immune from experiencing at least temporarily blurred vision.
